THE large fire that hit the oil platform PCH-1 (Cherne 1), located in the Campos Basin, approximately 130 km from the coast of Macaé, on the north coast of Rio de Janeiro, has left, so far, 32 injured workers . The fire began on the morning of Monday (21).
The injured had burns or inhaled smoke, according to a survey by Sindipetro-NF (North Fluminense oil tankers union).
The fire started around 7:25 am and was only fully controlled at 11:25, after about four hours of fighting the flames. The platform, which has been out of operation since 2020, had gas flow interrupted for safety.
During the incident, an employee fell into the sea, but was rescued alive by the Locar XXII support vessel. He had light burns and was conscious at the time of the rescue.
According to Sindipetro-NF, 32 workers were landed for medical care in hospitals in Campos (Unimed and Doctor Beda Hospital) and Macaé (HPM and Unimed). Of these, 14 suffered burns while the others had symptoms by inhalation of smoke.
The union points out that the number of victims may be even higher, as workers are still disembarking from air support units in Campos and Macaé, and not all cases were officially accounted for.
In a statement, Sindipetro-NF expressed concern about the episode, stating that it has denounced the lack of investments in maintenance and safety of the platforms. “Recurring accidents are a direct result of years of negligence, which led to the scrapping of offshore facilities,” said the entity.
Petrobras, in turn, stated that A commission will be created to investigate the causes of the fire and that non -essential workers are being detailed preventively so that the integrity of the unit is evaluated.
Union-NF’s director, Barbara Bezerra, and social worker Danielle Araújo provided support to the injured and her family members in hospitals. The union stressed that it continues to follow the consequences of the case.
