This year, the Amazon biome surpassed the number of fires recorded in the entire year of 2023. On Saturday (21), the area recorded 100,543 fire outbreaks — mark that surpassed the 98,646 occurrences throughout last year.
The total number of fires in the Amazon in 2024 is almost double the amount recorded up to September last year which recorded 57,941 fires. The number of fires has been increasing since April, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE).
In September alone, 37,354 fire outbreaks were recorded as of this Monday (23), an increase of around 40% compared to last year, which had 26,452 cases in the same period.
This Sunday (22), the state of Amazonas, which is home to most of the Amazon biome, reached a historic record for fire outbreaks, with 21,289. In 2022, the total number of fires in the entire year was 21,217, according to data from Inpe.
Amazonas in emergency
All 62 municipalities in Amazonas are in a state of emergency due to the effects of the drought, according to a decree by Governor Wilson Lima.
From June until this Sunday (22), more than 18.1 thousand fires were fought by the Amazonas Military Fire Department (CBMAM). More than 2 thousand fires in the capital and 16 thousand in the interior of the state.
