Fire outbreaks increased by about 283% between January and July in Brazil

The number of fires registered in Brazil between January and July of this year increased by 283%, according to monitoring data from Inpe (National Institute for Space Research).

In January, the total number of outbreaks in the North, Northeast, Midwest, South and Southeast regions totaled 2,759, while the month of July reached 10,591, even before the closure.

The winter season is characterized as the least rainy of the year, which makes the soil dry, increasing the risk of fires.

According to meteorologist Maria Clara, from Climatempo, it is normal for the number to increase exponentially with the arrival of the dry season, which began in May and runs until September.

On the map, it is possible to check the incidence of fires, marked by the red color. The most affected biome is the Cerrado, with more than 5,000 fires in the month of July, which is the worst number for the year.

But this is not the biggest for the same period of the historical series, which was in 2010, more than 12 thousand outbreaks.

Historic Serie

Despite the 350% increase between January and July, 2022 was not the year that recorded the highest number of outbreaks in the first half.
