Forest fires caused by heat and extreme winds reached Jerusalem on Wednesday (30), forcing the removal of communities and closing a main highway. The fire spread as the country celebrated Memory Day (Yom Hazikaron) and many Israelis visited tombs.
Rota 1 highway, which goes from Jerusalem to the city of Tel Aviv, was closed near the fire site, and police reported that three communities were emptied.
Videos obtained by Reuters showed drivers and passengers abandoning their vehicles on route 1 and running away to a safe place. Another video showed Israelis driving along a highway wrapped in flames and smoke.
Israel’s 77th Day of Independence begins on Wednesday night, but authorities canceled events in some areas of the country that were affected by the fires.
