“Fireball” meteor crosses the sky of Rio Grande do Sul

A meteor known as “fireball”, crossed the sky of Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul, on the night of last Sunday (24). The celestial body is part of the “September gamma Piscids” rain, which occurs until the 30th.

The record was made by the Heller & Jung Space Observatory, which began studying this type of phenomenon this year.

According to Professor Carlos Fernando Jung, CEO of the observatory, fireballs differ from other meteors because they are larger in size and more intense in brightness.

Sunday’s record had a duration of 2.63 seconds and a magnitude, that is, a brightness intensity, of -4.53. The meteor entered the atmosphere at an altitude of 93.53 km and extinguished over the Santa Maria area, at an altitude of 44.72 km.

A meteor is nothing more than a luminous phenomenon derived from asteroids, meteoroids, comets or fragments of them.

According to Jung, it is possible that new fireball crashes will occur this year.
