Firefighter arrested on suspicion of feminicide in RJ

A Fire Department sergeant was arrested this Monday (18) on suspicion of feminicide against Rafaela Torres, 35 years old. Her car was found on fire, last Sunday (17), in Saquarema, in the Lagos region, in Rio de Janeiro. Inside the vehicle, there was a charred body.

The Civil Police believe that the victim is the ex-wife of Silvio Denis Cabral de Oliveira, who had been missing since last Saturday (16). However, only a DNA test will confirm this information. Rafaela's family members were called to provide genetic material. The samples will be compared with the corpse found in the car. The result can be released within 30 days.

“I will represent the extension of the suspect’s temporary detention until the arrival of this report”, explained the delegate responsible for the case, André Bueno.

Images from security cameras, to which the police had access, show when a dark vehicle stops next to Rafaela's car. A man, who was identified by the victim's family as Silvio, gets out of the passenger seat armed and forces the woman to leave with him. The Civil Police have not yet identified who was driving the car while the suspect kidnapped the woman.

A third man, who was in the passenger seat of Rafaela's vehicle, runs away on foot. That witness has not yet been identified. The suspect's car leaves with the woman, but returns moments later to take over driving her vehicle.

In a statement at the Saquarema Police Station (124th DP), the 42-year-old sergeant, who is stationed in Maricá, said that he does not remember anything that happened on the day of the crime. According to the police chief, Silvio said he was suffering from a psychotic episode and was taking controlled medication. However, the fact that the suspect had burns on his arms and face caught the police's attention.

“The burn is yet another indication that he was the one who set the vehicle on fire. He presents an evasive statement. He even said that he doesn’t know why his arm and face were burned,” said the delegate.

The sentence for feminicide ranges from 12 to 30 years.
