Firefighters rescue tapir injured in fire in Brasilia National Park

Teams from the Federal District Fire Department (CBMDF) and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) found, this Wednesday (18), a tapir injured as a result of the fire in the Brasilia National Park .

The animal was rescued with the help of veterinarians and taken to the Brasília Zoo’s emergency care area. Specialists provided emergency care at the zoo.

The rescue lasted about two hours. The adult tapir was found alone, with injuries on its body and four burned paws.

According to ICMBio employees who accompanied the rescue, the animal was very skittish and needed to be sedated so that transport could take place safely.

After four days of work by the firefighters, this was the first rescue of a wild animal since Sunday (15), when a large fire hit the park.

On Wednesday, a support tent was set up to assist and rescue injured animals. The tent provides emergency care and sends animals to veterinary hospitals.

According to the Secretary of Environment and Animal Protection of the Federal District, Gutemberg Gomes, the fire is not yet completely under control, but the fire has been contained.

This means that there are no large fires, but there is a high risk of reignition, and therefore local work continues. According to the secretary, however, containing the fire may represent an improvement in the column of smoke that has covered the federal capital in recent days.

“The fire is already contained, it is not under control, but society, and especially residents in the northern part, can rest assured, because contained fire means less smoke,” said Gomes.

To date, 1,473 hectares of the park have been destroyed by the fire, the equivalent of 818 football fields. This represents 3.5% of the total area, which is almost 42 thousand hectares.

“We imagine that the animals were able to escape the fire and went to another area that is not so hot. The good news is that we probably won’t see that scene of injured animals, because the fire was restricted to a smaller area of the park,” said the secretary.
