The wildfires that raged through Los Angeles County burned more than 14,500 hectares, or 145 square kilometers – a total area larger than some of the most densely populated cities in the United States.
So far, at least five fires have burned an area:
- Almost the same size as Miami
- Two and a half times larger than Manhattan, home to 1.6 million New Yorkers
- Larger than San Francisco and Boston, both covering over 119 square miles
- And about 3.5% the size of Rhode Island, the smallest state
