There are already four large fires in Rome in less than a month. According to the councilor for the environment Sabrina Alfonsi “Behind every fire there is the waste supply chain”. For her as for the mayor Roberto Gualtieri “there is a man’s hand, you have to understand if it is a culpable or willful act”. The prosecutor has opened a file for now without the hypothesis of a crime.

“The area where the fire started was cleared no more than a month and a half ago and there was a waste sorting area: the flames followed the line of these waste to get to the demolition cars ”, continues the councilor according to what is reported by the Corriere della Sera. The fire spread very quickly, in less than ten minutes in Torre Spaccata, on the eastern outskirts of Rome. From the flames of a few scrubs, three car wreckers were involved and a black and toxic cloud tens of meters high and visible for kilometers, well beyond the city center.

The former mayor Virginia Raggi writes on Facebook: «As I have been asking for years, junkyards must be relocated. I had started the process and they tried to stop me. There are no more excuses now ». Maurizio Gasparri of Forza Italia attacks the mayor: “Apocalyptic situation in Rome”.

Mayor Gualtieri he also talks about eco-mafias in an interview with Corriere della Sera. «The waste supply chain is traditionally among the most permeable to mafia infiltrations. In this sense, finally endow the capital with modern treatment plants under public control and making it self-sufficient like other European capitals is also important in terms of legality as well as that of the environment and cleanliness ».

It always comes back to waste-to-energy plant to realize. “After the Malagrotta fire, outlets decreased and more than 2000 tons of waste remained on the street … We are working hard to reopen the Albano landfill and then the Guidonia Tmb, which would finally allow us to normalize the situation for the next few months and to return to focus on improving cleanliness. From now until December, each area of the city will have a team dedicated to sweeping and washing streets and sidewalks. Ama is working on strengthening the differentiated and overcoming the current horrible bins ».

I 5 Stelle di Conte are firmly against the waste-to-energy plant. The Aid decree law, which must be converted to the Chambers by July 16, also contains the special powers of the Mayor of Rome for the construction of the plant. The issue has become political for some time and could be one of those of the tear with the Draghi government.
