Fires in the Amazon more than doubled in the first months of 2024

Between the first day of January 2024 and the last Monday (29), the Amazon recorded 8,969 fires, an increase of 153% compared to 2023, which saw 3,540 fires . The data comes from the Inpe (National Institute for Space Research) fire monitoring program and is not limited to the Amazon biome.

According to the agency, the total number of fires across the country rose 81%, accounting for 17,064 occurrences in the first four months of the year. Fire outbreaks in the area of the nine states that make up the Legal Amazon region alone represent more than 60% of fires in Brazil.

This significant increase compared to the first months of last year comes shortly after the historic drought that hit the region between June and August 2023, and is considered by Inpe itself as a side effect of the drought.

In the Cerrado, the second largest Brazilian biome and one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity in the world, Inpe data shows around 1,300 more fire outbreaks than in the first four months of last year, there were 4,506 in total.

In addition to the north and northeast of the country, the highlight goes to the Pantanal, which even in the rainiest months – the first of the year – recorded 646 points of fire in the vegetation, representing a significant increase of 1,033% compared to the same period of the year. past.
