the first russian ballerina Olga Smirnovaa critique of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, left the Bolshoi and will join the Dutch National Ballet, in the Netherlands, the company said on Wednesday (16).
“It is a privilege to have her dancing with our company in the Netherlands – even if the circumstances that led to this change are incredibly sad,” Dutch National Ballet director Ted Brandsen said in a statement.
Smirnova, 30, left Russia in March. In a statement on her Telegram account reposted by the Dutch dance troupe, she said she was “against war with all her might”.
“I never thought I would be ashamed of Russia, I have always been proud of the talented Russian people, our cultural and athletic achievements,” he wrote. “But now I feel like a line has been drawn.”
Smirnova is now in the Netherlands, a ballet spokesperson has confirmed.
Last week, it was the Brazilian David Motta Soares, dancer and one of the most important soloists of the Bolshoi, who left the company in solidarity with the Ukrainians.
