An AI-Powered Crewless Ship Is Ready To Recreate The Mayflower Voyage

The first autonomous ship which is docked in the harbor of Plymouth, England, is being developed using advanced artificial intelligence technology. This ship is going to retrace the route that the Mayflower took some 400 years ago. But this ship is not special because of this fact, it is actually to change a lot of things for the scientists and researchers who spend their lives trying to understand and unearth the hidden gems and mysteries in the depths of oceans.

The Vessel Will Not Have Any People Space

This ship is going to be completely crewless and it will be solar and wind-powered. It has been equipped with cameras and sensors that are going to work as the eyes of human navigators. The sensors will protect the ship from rummaging into other vessels in the sea, and with the help of AI technology, it will also let the ship gauge a lot of different sea parameters.

Software engineer Ollie Thompson is currently trying to train the AI models of the ship with millions of images to make it capable of avoiding accidents in the sea. With the help of cameras, robotic experts are quite confident that this ship will look at its radar and will be able to chart its own route. Through various simulation phases, the scientists and experts are trying to see what the ship ‘sees.’ This will help them perfect the AI model training for this ship to the maximum.

With the help of global positioning systems, the ship is going to navigate itself just like humans do.

The uncertainty around the first voyage of this autonomous vessel is quite palpable.

Rosie Lickorish, a software engineer has expressed a lot of excitement for the first voyage of this vessel across the Atlantic Ocean. However, there is uncertainty clouding it too because no one can be sure if this voyage will be successful or not, and whether this vessel will ever make it across the Atlantic or not?

The main purpose of this autonomous ship is to learn more about Earth’s deep waters.

To study plastic pollution, warming waters, and the effects of it all on marine life are some of the key reasons why this ship is being created.

Besides, it is a more cost-effective way too. At the moment, it is very expensive to send researchers and scientists on voyages to discover the mysteries of the oceans and carry-on research on various things related to marine life. Besides, the dangers of harmful consequences to the lives of these researchers are always there too. So, all of these concerns can be alleviated if this recreation of the Mayflower voyage is successful.
