The Ukrainian authorities they suspect that MP tried to bribe the head of the government reconstruction agency in the first documented cryptocurrency bribery scandal of Ukraine, the authorities announced.
The National Anti-Corruption Service of Ukraine (NABU) announced that the MP, himself a member of the parliament’s anti-corruption committee, believed to have offered $50,000 in bitcoins in exchange for government funds to rebuild infrastructure that was under his control. The National Anti-Corruption Agency did not name the MP, as reported by APE-MPE.
The head of the State Service for Rehabilitation and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine reported the bribery to the authorities after receiving the first installment of $10,000, the Service said. “This is the first documented illegal cryptocurrency transaction in the history of the Ukrainian anti-corruption services,” the Service said in a statement.
The Ukraine has stepped up efforts to fight corruption in the run-up to its accession to the European Union, which has made the fight against corruption a key condition for the start of negotiations. In an interview with Reuters, NABU chief Semen Kryvonos has said his agency will prioritize fighting wartime crimes in strategic areas such as defense and reconstruction.
Today, the investigative authorities announced that they exist suspicions against two high-ranking officials of cyber security for embezzlement. In a Facebook post, the state reconstruction agency says zero tolerance for corruption is a “core principle” of its mission. “Our cooperation with law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies has been and will be systemic.”
