The first day of conclave This Wednesday (7) ended with black smoke leaving the chimney of the sistine chapel, which signaled that the cardinals did not reach a consensus to elect the next Pope.
The day was marked by traditional rites of the Catholic Church while a crowd waited from 14h (Brasília time) to signal a result on the vote.
The election for the choice of Francisco’s successor will follow on Thursday (8).
No Pope was chosen yet
The cardinals failed to elect a new Pope on the first day of the conclave, which means that they will return to the Sistine Chapel on Thursday (7), when there will be up to four votes to choose a successor of Pope Francis.
What is needed to be elected
There are 133 voting cardinals, all confined to the Vatican during the conclave. Any of them needs two thirds of the votes to become the next Pope. They will continue to vote until a new Catholic leader is chosen. See in this article how the voting process works.
Eyes in the chimney
At the end of each voting session, the cardinals burn the banknotes. Black smoke means that the cardinals have not reached consensus, and white smoke means that there is a new Pope.
