With all tickets sold out, the ninth edition of Rock in Rio starts this Friday (2). With no rain forecast, about 100,000 people will follow the shows of Iron Maiden, Dream Theater and Sepultura with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. The event, which usually takes place every two years, is held with an interval of three years compared to the previous edition due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition to the rock concerts this Friday (2), the first weekend of the festival will have performances by other important names in music. DJ Alok and rapper Post Malone are some of those confirmed for Saturday (3). While on Sunday (4), the main stage will have performances by singer Iza and Justin Bieber.
However, the weather forecast for the weekend can make it difficult for visitors to experience it. According to the Climatempo portal, there are forecasts of rain showers on Saturday night and throughout Sunday.
During the next week, the festival starts on Thursday (8) and runs until Sunday (11). Bands like Offspring and Guns N’ Roses open the second weekend of shows. For Friday (9), the music will be on account of Billy Idol and the band Green Day. On Saturday (10), Palco Mundo welcomes artists such as singer Camila Cabello and Coldplay. Closing the festival, Ivete Sangalo and Dua Lipa perform on Sunday.
Movement in tourism and the economy
The city government estimates that Rock in Rio will inject R$1.7 billion into the Rio economy. Organizers speak of R$2.2 billion.
The Rio Convention & Visitors Bureau (Rio CVB) estimated that the event’s revenue will reach US$ 158.48 million (about R$ 829 at the current price), with the generation of US$ 7.924 million (about R$ 41, 45 million) of Service Tax (ISS) for the municipality’s economy.
The other segments of the tourism sector should also benefit from the concerts, as visitors take the opportunity to get to know the city.
According to the Employers’ Union of Accommodation Means of Rio, HotéisRIO, the average number of rooms booked on the dates of the shows is 80%. For the first weekend, September 2nd to 4th, occupancy is 77%. In the second, between the 8th and 11th, the rate is 83%.
There will be approximately 360 thousand people from outside Rio over the seven days of the event. Of these, 10,000 will be foreigners from 31 different countries, according to HotéisRIO.
political demonstrations
For the first time in history, Rock in Rio is held during an election period. In a statement, the event stated that it will not allow the presence of candidates for the elections on the festival’s stages.
The organization also recommended that companies, institutions and artists involved in holding the festival at the Olympic Park in the capital of Rio de Janeiro are aware of the electoral law.
However, according to the Federal Supreme Court (STF), demonstrations are allowed by the performing artists and the public.
