The first death of a patient from rare thrombosis after administration of the vaccine against him coronavirus of AstraZeneca announced today the chief physician of Alberta, Canada.
Canada has reported at least five cases of thrombosis following the vaccine, but public health officials say the benefits of AstraZeneca vaccine outweigh the possible side effects, as AMPE points out.
The case of Alberta, a woman in her 50s, is the second reported case of thrombosis and the only death recorded after more than 253,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine were administered in the province, Alberta chief physician Dina Hinso said in a statement yesterday.
“While every death is tragic, it is important to remember that the risks of death or serious problems from COVID-19 remain much higher than the risk of being vaccinated with AstraZeneca,” she added.
AstraZeneca did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Canada has recorded 1,243,242 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 24,342 deaths, according to a Reuters report.
Last month the province of Quebec reported his first death to Canada of a patient after administration of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
AstraZeneca, in collaboration with the University of Oxford, was one of the leading companies in the fight to develop a vaccine against COVID-19.
Its cheap and easily portable vaccine has been described as a leader in the fight against the disease, but since then the company has faced a number of issues.
The rare complication, which some regulators, including the Canadian one, has scientifically described as “Immune Etiology Thrombocytopenia” after vaccination, involves the formation of blood clots accompanied by thrombocytopenia (low platelet count).
Dozens of countries suspended use of the AstraZeneca vaccine in March following reports of rare but severe blood clots.
Many have resumed administration of the vaccine, either in whole or in part, following the announcement by health regulators that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the potential risks of its administration.
