First death from monkey pox in India

India today confirmed the first death from monkeypox, a young man from the southern Indian state of Kerala. This is the fourth death from the disease known during the current outbreak.

Last week Spain reported two deaths linked to monkeypox and Brazil its first death from the disease.

The death in India is also the first to be recorded in Asia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared monkeypox a global public health emergency on 23 July.

The victim of the disease in India was a 22-year-old Indian man who died on Saturday, a Kerala government minister told reporters, adding that the government had isolated 21 people who had been in contact with him.

“This person arrived in Kerala on July 21 but visited a hospital only on the 26th when he developed fatigue and fever,” the minister said, adding that there was no need to panic as none of his contacts had shown symptoms.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George told reporters yesterday that the victim’s family had told authorities the previous day that the man had tested positive in the United Arab Emirates before returning to India.

The country’s federal health ministry did not comment on the death, saying only that the government has set up a task force made up of high-ranking officials to monitor cases of the disease in the country, where local media have reported at least five.

At the end of last month the WHO announced that 78 countries had reported more than 18,000 cases of monkeypox – most in Europe.

According to the WHO, the monkeypox virus causes disease with less severe symptoms than the smallpox virus and is found mainly in central and western Africa.

The disease is transmitted from animals to humans.

Human-to-human transmission occurs through contact with body fluids, skin lesions or contaminated objects as well as through respiratory droplets following prolonged close contact over a short distance.
