An old and worn copy – and bought for less than R$2 – of the first edition of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone “ by JK Rowling sold for $13,560 at auction.
Published by Bloomsbury Publishers in 1997, the book is one of the first 500 printings of the first edition before becoming one of the greatest phenomena in literature.
The previous owner was a collector who died at the beginning of the year and had bought the book for the equivalent of R$ 1.88 in Wolverhampton, England, from a batch of 300 that were sent to libraries. The auctioneer behind the sale, Richard Winterton, had to dig through hundreds of boxes of her belongings to find it.
The book is hardcover, carries the library identification sticker, a sticker on the spine with the letter J, withdrawal stamp and price. Besides the curious fact that there is an “o” missing from the word “philosopher” on the back cover.
According to Richard, the author of the winning bid is a resident of Los Angeles, in the United States.
