First night with a curfew in Slovakia

In Slovakia, the night traffic ban imposed by the Ministry of Health in the country, which currently has the highest mortality rate of COVID-19 in the world, came into force last night.

Citizens are not allowed to leave their homes unless they have a special permit, from 20:00 to 05:00, sets out a government decree.

Even during the day it is recommended to people to stay at home, with a few exceptions, in particular visits to doctors, going to work, walking with pets or walking in nature.

The night traffic ban will last at least until March 19 and the measure may be waived.

The EU member state, with a population of 5.4 million, has recorded an average of 24 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, according to the French Agency’s census, which is based on authorities’ announcements.

This extremely high index “Due to several factors, Slovakia made many mistakes”, Peter Wisolaiski, chairman of the union representing the country’s medical staff, told AFP.

“The restrictive measures were implemented too late and were not adequately monitored. In addition, the mortality rate is due to the general poor state of health services in Slovakia, “Mr Wisolaiski continued.

According to him, more than the adoption of new restrictive measures, it is necessary to better implement those that have already been decided, “which could reduce the number of infections”.

Slovakia on Monday became the second EU member state, after Hungary, to receive a shipment of doses of the Russian vaccine for the new coronavirus, Sputnik V. It has ordered 2 million doses.

Slovak authorities have treated ten patients for treatment in neighboring Poland, and the country is receiving support from a group of doctors who arrived on its territory from Romania after appealing to other European Union countries for help.
