First Panel of the STF maintains the extradition of Italian mobster Rocco Morabito

Unanimously, the First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) denied appeal and upheld the extradition of Italian mafioso Rocco Morabito, accused of being part of one of the largest criminal organizations in Italy and arrested in Paraíba by Interpol.

In March of this year, the collegiate maintained the extradition of the mobster. Rocco is in the Federal Penitentiary in Brasília. In June of last year, Minister Cármen Lúcia, rapporteur of the case, denied the defense appeal and decided to keep Morabito imprisoned for up to 3 years in the Federal Penitentiary in Brasília.

He had been on the run since 2019, when he escaped from a prison in Uruguay, pending extradition. The drug dealer was arrested on May 24, 2021 in a hotel in João Pessoa. The extradition request was filed by the government of Italy.

In this Tuesday’s session (24), the collegiate followed the vote of the rapporteur to deny an appeal presented by the defense of Morabito.

According to Minister Cármen Lúcia, the Italian’s defense has tried to “delay the procedural march towards conclusion of the process”.

“The attempt to procrastinate this process has been demonstrated. The defense repeatedly tries to keep the process going with numerous appeals,” he said.

Carmen was followed by ministers Rosa Weber, Dias Toffoli, Luís Roberto Barroso and Alexandre de Moraes.
