First premier in Estonia, in Northern Europe women rule

Northern Europe? Women rule it. The latest arrival is Estonia. The leader of the opposition, the Europeanist Kaja Kallas, was called to form a new government and, after the confirmation of the Parliament, would become the first female head of government in the Baltic country. Not the only one in the higher latitudes: there are women driving Norway, Lithuania, Iceland, Denmark and Finland.

The 43-year-old leader of the reformist party and daughter of former premier Siimn Kallas, would replace Juri Ratas, who resigned after his party was overwhelmed by a case of suspected corruption and the entire center-right coalition fell.

Joins the Finnish Sanna Marin which is the youngest politician to lead an EU state. Its government is female-dominated and criticism has come precisely because not enough space was given to men. Sweden, Spain and France also have more ministers than ministers.

In the European Union, countries have one as head of government donna: Belgium (Sophie Wilmès), Denmark (Mette Frederiksen), Germany (Angela Merkel), Iceland (Katrìn Jakobsdòttir), Finland (Sanna Marin), Lithuania (Ingrida Šimonytė) and Norway (Erna Solberg). From the Baltic to Scandinavia: only Latvia and Sweden have male heads of government.

The Women, Peace and Security Index, the index of the condition of women in the various countries of the world, rewards some of these countries. In first place, in the 2019-2020 report, is Norway, followed by Switzerland, Finland and Denmark. Also in the top 15 remain countries such as Sweden, the United Kingdom and Spain. Out of 167 countries, Italy is 28th. Our nation gains four positions from the previous year, but it remains the last of the G8 countries and is behind countries like Lithuania, Serbia and Poland.
