First quarter GDP brings positive outlook for the end of the year, says economist

in interview to CNN This Thursday (2), the chief economist at Inter Rafaela Vitória said that the 1% advance of the Brazilian economy in the first quarter of 2022 should raise the projections for the end of the year.

“We had a very strong result, despite coming in slightly below market expectations… at the beginning of the year we did not expect a stronger recovery, and it does bring a more positive outlook for the end of the year,” he said. .

“Considering what the economy has grown so far, it can close the year with growth very close to 1.5%,” he added.

The economist also stated that the GDP result is due to atypical factors, coming from an economy still in recovery after the initial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“One of the factors is repressed demand, as several sectors were not released or were not operating at the same level before the pandemic, such as travel, transport, leisure… sectors that grew significantly this quarter due to the opening of the economy”, he highlighted.

“Still, we are cautious in our expectations from now on, because some of the factors that brought such a positive performance this quarter are not recurring”, he concluded.
