The number of air accidents in the first quarter of 2023 is the highest in the last five years in Brazil. In all, there were 48 this year, counting the fall of a single engine on the afternoon of this Wednesday (22), in Goiânia.
In 2018, there were 55 accidents in the first three months of the year. Data were extracted from the Aeronautical Accident Prevention System (SIPAER), of the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
Between 2018 and 2023, the numbers remained similar: there were 46 accidents in 2019; 40 in 2020; 46 in 2021; and 40 again in 2022. The year with the highest number of accidents in the first quarter of the year in the last decade was 2014, with 59 records.
Despite the greater number of accidents, the number of deaths is lower than the average of the last nine years for a first quarter. Without considering this Wednesday’s accident, there were 11 fatalities in 2023, compared to an average of 22. In 2014, there were 14 deaths in the first quarter, and 20 in 2021.
Since 2012, there have been 1,856 air accidents in the country, with 832 confirmed deaths. Of this total, 48 accidents happened in 2023.
Private transport and agricultural aircraft were the ones most involved in accidents this year. There were 16 private aircraft and another 14 agricultural, until March 18th.
The other accidents occurred with eight other experimental aircraft, three instructional, two direct administration, two specialized and two non-classified.
Accident in Goiania
Around 5:10 pm this Wednesday (22), a small twin-engine plane crashed into houses in the Vila Mutirão I neighborhood, in Goiânia (GO), leaving two people dead and four others injured.
According to the Fire Department, all the victims were occupants of the aircraft. That is, there were no deaths and injuries of people on the ground.
The plane that crashed was an Embraer model EMB-810D prefix PT-VQV. The twin-engine turboprop aircraft has capacity for six people, including two crew members.
According to the Brazilian Aeronautical Registry, from the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac), the crashed aircraft belonged to the company Rodrigues e Rocha Holding Empreendimentos Patrimoniiais Ltda and was manufactured in 1993. CNN sought the company, but still did not get a response.
