First unofficial marriage of same-sex couple in Albania – “Our society is very patriarchal and homophobic”

On the roof of the mayor's office in Albania's capital Tirana, Alba Ahmetaj and Edlira Mara held an unofficial wedding ceremony on Sunday, a symbolic move they hope will advance LGBTI+ rights in the conservative Balkan country. Same-sex marriage is not allowed in Albania, and as Reuters notes, their cohabitation will not be recognized by the state. But the couple, who were married by two British pastors, wanted to send a message. “Our society is very patriarchal and homophobic,” Ahmetaj said before the ceremony. “This is something that concerns us, why should society get involved?” A little further down, the police guarded the entrance to the building in case of a protest. When the wedding was announced on social media a day earlier, the comments were full of hate. “Sick people,” one said, “you should burn in hell,” wrote another.
