Despite the arrival of autumn, the first weekend of the new weather season still has summer characteristics, with high temperatures and chances of thunderstorms.
“Autumn is a transitional season between the hottest and wettest period of the year, summer, and the driest and coldest, winter. So, it’s normal to have hotter, stuffier days”, explains Carine Gama, ClimaTempo meteorologist.
Gama explains that the climate still reflects patterns of the La Niña phenomenon, which causes cooling of the waters of the equatorial pacific ocean and tends to reduce rainfall in parts of the Center South of Brazil.
The specialist also predicts a sharp decline in rainfall in April over parts of the Southeast, South and Midwest.
First weekend of autumn
South
Rio Grande do Sul dawned this Saturday with mild temperatures, between 10ºC and 12ºC in some municipalities in the Serra. For this weekend, the forecast is that a mass of dry air will bring longer periods of sunshine, but great thermal amplitude, with the temperature gradually rising throughout the day.
This Sunday, the temperature should drop even further, with the possibility of frost in parts of the Serra Catarinense, but throughout the Sunday afternoon the sun should predominate in the three states of the region, says Gama.
Southeast
In the Southeast region, special attention is given to those who are in the state of São Paulo, due to the arrival of the cold front that has left this feeling of stuffy weather, according to the expert.
“High temperatures throughout Friday were recorded throughout much of the state. This Saturday is still hot, but we must pay attention to the storms. The arrival of this cold front causes heavy rain with thunderstorms, winds, gusts around 50 to 60 km per hour and chances of hail”, he says.
For those who are going to enjoy Lollapalooza, the specialist’s recommendation is to take a raincoat and prepare for heavy rains, with lots of thunderstorms and hail.
The states of Rio, Minas and Espírito Santo have less chance of rain. “But, even so, it can rain at the end of the day in the center-south of Minas and also in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, but the heat is the main highlight of these three areas, with a predicted maximum of 37°C in Rio de Janeiro this afternoon” , it says.
Alert in Petropolis
There are plenty of storms over the entire Serra Fluminense and parts of the Zona da Mata Mineira, including in the Petrópolis region, due to the announcement of the cold front, Gama emphasizes.
“This Sunday, the rain gains more intensity in these areas and continues throughout this Monday. The next week starts with a lot of rain in Serra Fluminense. The volume should not be as high as observed, but it is still very heavy rain. Even coming with lower volumes, it reaches a very fragile area”, he says.
North and Northeast
The presence of the intertropical convergence zone in the North and Northeast regions, that band of cloudiness close to the equator, has made the weather very unstable and caused a lot of rain in this area, says Gama.
“It has rained in the last 24 hours about 80 mm in Fortaleza and the forecast is for more rain this Saturday and the weekend. From areas of the eastern strip of Pernambuco to the state of Amapa we have very unstable weather conditions with rain at any given time,” he says.
“There is still the feeling of stuffy weather and temperatures are high, but the rains come hard and with lots of thunderstorms. The interior of Bahia, Pernambuco and part of Tocantins has a drier air mass prevailing. Other areas in the North and Northeast at risk of rain today”.
Midwest
For the Midwest region, irregular rain showers are expected, with a predominance of dry air mass. During this Saturday, the sun predominates in all states of the region, but with a risk of isolated rain for the afternoon in Brasília, Goiana and Cuiabá.
In Campo Grande, a drier air mass reappears, especially in the southern and western areas of Mato Grosso do Sul, and the rain is more concentrated in the northern areas of Mato Grosso do Sul, but close to the state of Goiás.
