Five are arrested during an operation against international animal trafficking

Five people were arrested on Tuesday (6) during a Federal Police operation to combat international animal trafficking. According to the PF, the animals were captured in the Brazilian habitat and sold to Argentine and Uruguayan illegal traders .

In the action, federal police officers served eleven search warrants in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná and São Paulo.

18 birds and 7 turtles were seized without documentation of origin and 3 firearms without registration. Among the seized species were cardial, ferro, bicudo, curió, canary, blood, leafer and turtle tiger-water. All seized animals were sent to the Ibama screening centers and the Environment Institute of each state.

According to the PF, the investigation began in 2023, through a complaint from Freeland Brazil, a Brazilian organization that fights the animal trafficking. The complaint, according to the police, reported on an Argentine who was collecting birds, reptiles and mammals from Brazil to be sold in Uruguay and Argentina.

Due to the mode of transport, most animals arrived at the lifeless or very weakened destination.

Animal trafficking has relevant impacts, according to the PF, such as the risk of zoonoses contamination, the possibility of species extinction, the loss of genetic diversity and the balance of the ecosystem.

Also according to the police, the “exposure of wild animals on social networks, as if they were pets, have increased exploitation and fauna trafficking. The sale of animals is usually accompanied by other crimes, such as document forgery, fraud, corruption, smuggling and criminal association”.
