Five mayors of the largest opposition party in Turkey were detained

The imprisonment of five mayors of the Social Democratic Republican People’s Party (CHP), the main formation of the opposition, was ordered by Turkish justice today. Three of the mayors are heads of Istanbul Municipal Districts, a CHP spokesman told the French agency. Seventeen other people, who were also arrested over the weekend, including the deputy mayors of Istanbul Municipal Districts, were also placed under temporary detention for “corruption”. In addition to the mayor of Constantinople Ekrem Imamoglou, who has been in prison since late March, eight mayors of Istanbul apartments, who belong to the CHP, have been arrested and detained by the end of October.
