Agents from Ibama and the Federal Highway Police (PRF) were shot at during an operation to combat illegal mining in the Sararé Indigenous Land, in the state of Mato Grosso.
The confrontation took place in the early hours of Saturday (28) and resulted in the death of five miners after being shot. The place is about 480 kilometers from the capital CuiabĂ¡.
The teams seized six weapons that were in possession of the suspected criminals including a 556 rifle, a submachine gun, a 12 gauge shotgun, two pistols and a revolver, as well as ammunition and other accessories.
The operation, which began last Monday (23), has the support of three aircraft. To date, the following have been destroyed:
- 30 excavators
- 22 trucks
- Two trucks
- A loader
- 6 bikes
- 25 camps
- 5 thousand liters of fuel
TI Sararé, which has 67 thousand hectares and is inhabited by Nambikwara groups, it is one of the areas most affected by illegal mining in Brazil.
Since 2021, more than 1,900 hectares have been degraded in the search for gold in the region. Since 2023, Ibama has destroyed around 200 excavators at the site.
Massacre with four deaths
At least four people died after a massacre that occurred in the same illegal mining area in the state. According to the police, the incident occurred last Monday (23).
Two people who were injured were left at the door of a hospital in Pontes e Lacerda. One of them died in the health unit.
The victim who did not resist was identified as FlĂ¡via Melo Miranda Soares, 20 years old. The other, a 33-year-old man, remains in serious condition.
On Tuesday (24), the police found three more bodies all male, who had marks from gunshots.
