Five more Johnson ministers resigned

LAST UPDATE: 10:26

Britain’s Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis and Under Secretary of State for Finance Ellen Whately announced their resignations today, as departures from Boris Johnson’s government continue.

Also today, Security Secretary Damian Hinds resigned, saying the country needs Prime Minister Boris Johnson to leave in order to “restore confidence in our democracy”.

“More important than any government or leader are the standards we uphold in public life and faith in democracy and public administration. Because of the serious erosion of these, I have come to the conclusion that the right thing for our country and for our party is to resign as its leader and as prime minister,” Hints wrote in his resignation letter addressed to Johnson.

Already more than 50 ministers, deputy ministers and government officials have announced their resignation since yesterday, Wednesday.

This was followed by the resignations of British undersecretary for pensions Guy Opperman, who said the prime minister’s reluctance to step down had left him with no other choice, as well as the undersecretary for culture Chris Phillip, who had previously called for the prime minister’s resignation.
