Five people die and six are injured in US attack

A shooting in downtown Louisville, in the US state of Kentucky, left five dead and at least six injured, who were transported to the University of Louisville hospital, including a police officer, with “several injuries”, police said. The incident took place on Monday morning (10).

The status of those transported is unknown at this time.

The shooter was confirmed dead and the circumstances of his death are unknown, police said at a meeting at the scene. There is no active danger at this time, they said.

Earlier, the Louisville Metropolitan Police said it was responding to “an active perpetrator” in the 300 block of East Main Street in downtown, adding that “there are multiple victims.” The Louisville FBI described the incident as a shootout, and other officials urged residents to stay away from the area.

The source said there was an exchange of fire between the gunman and the police during the incident. The assailant was neutralized and the incident ended, the source said.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said in a tweet that he was heading to the scene of the shooting. “Please pray for all affected families and the city of Louisville,” he wrote.
