Five people split reward for tips from suspect in NY subway shooting

Five people who provided “critical information” that helped lead to the arrest of the man accused of this week’s mass shooting on a New York subway will split a $50,000 reward, the court announced. New York Police Department this Friday (15).

Frank James, the man accused of carrying out one of the most violent attacks on the city’s mass transit system, was arrested in Manhattan on Wednesday after a 30-hour manhunt that was aided by a flurry of tips from the public. James, 62, also called the police hotline to turn himself in, helping with his own capture, according to his lawyers.

“We appreciate all those who responded to our request for information in locating this suspect, including all those whose tips didn’t pan out,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said in a statement. “We urge the public to join us in this effort to find this suspect and New Yorkers have stepped up.”

James, 62, is accused of injuring 30 people when he detonated smoke bombs and sprayed the interior of a subway car with gunfire during Tuesday morning rush hour in Brooklyn.

Police said 10 people were shot. About 20 other people were injured by canisters of smoke or the stampede of terrified passengers exiting the subway car onto the platform, prosecutors said.

The NYPD said its detectives used the public tip stream to build a timeline of events that helped them locate James. Of the people who gave tips, five were chosen whose “information directly contributed” to the suspect’s arrest.

The NYPD did not identify the five people who will share equally in the $50,000 reward, which is made up of funds from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Transport Workers Union Local 100 and the New York City Police Foundation.

“Thanks to the help of these five Good Samaritans, NYPD was able to do their job and get a dangerous suspect off the streets within hours of his photo being released,” New York Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement.
