Flamengo side is denounced for death of delivery man in a hit-and-run

Flamengo side Ramon Ramos Lima, 21, was denounced by the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) for manslaughter, after running over and killing app delivery guy, Jonatas Davi dos Santos, in December 2021.

According to the MPRJ, at the time of the collision with the bicycle, the athlete’s car was above the maximum speed allowed for the road, of 70 km/h, in addition to not keeping the safety distance between the vehicle and the bicycle. The document also highlights that, seconds before the collision, the car driven by Ramon was fined for speeding, with the radar installed at the location registering 110 km/h.

Also according to the document, the Brazilian Traffic Code, in its article 29, reports that, in the transit of vehicles on land roads open to circulation, the driver must keep a lateral and frontal safety distance between his and other vehicles, as well as in relation to the edge of the runway, considering, at the time, the speed and conditions of the place, traffic, vehicle and weather conditions.

And that larger vehicles will always be responsible for the safety of smaller ones, motorized ones for non-motorized ones and, together, for the safety of pedestrians.

The accident happened on the night of December 4 at Avenida das Américas, in Barra da Tijuca, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Jonathan was on a bike and was working delivering food through an app. He was rescued by the Fire Department, but did not survive his injuries.

Days after the accident, the Civil Police indicted the player for “manslaughter in the direction of a motor vehicle”. According to the conclusion of the investigation, conducted by the Barra da Tijuca police station (16th DP), the recklessness of both was decisive for the accident.

In a note, the athlete’s defense alleges that Ramon provided assistance to the victim and states that “the complaint of the body conflicts with the police investigation by stating that Ramon did not keep the necessary safety on the road and makes a mistake in stating that he was driving vehicle at 102 km/h at the time of the incident.”

“UJ Football Talent, together with attorney Dr. Xisto Mattos, comes to the public to comment on the situation of the athlete Ramon, Flamengo side.

Ramon was denounced by the Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro after a police investigation that analyzed facts that occurred on December 4, 2021, when he suffered a car accident on Avenida das Américas, in Barra da Tijuca, with cyclist Jonatas Davi dos Santos. Santos, who did not survive after a collision with the player’s car.

Still dismayed by the episode, even three months later, Ramon deeply regrets the loss of Santos, accompanied by UJ and their legal representatives, expressing his deep respect to the cyclist’s family and friends.

At the same time, he informs that he is studying, together with the lawyer Xisto Mattos, a response to the unfair accusations of the MP from Rio de Janeiro. The agency’s complaint conflicts with the police investigation by stating that Ramon did not keep the necessary safety on the road and makes a mistake in stating that he was driving the vehicle at 102 km/h at the time of the event. The police authority itself actually found a different number from the one registered by the MP.

In addition, Ramon highlights that he provided adequate assistance to Santos and was by the side of the cyclist’s family at all necessary times. He also collaborated and remains in contact with the authorities for a better resolution of the case. Born in São João de Meriti, in Baixada Fluminense, Ramon is known in football for his ethical and correct conduct, accustomed to good customs and good practices, fruits of his family upbringing with values maintained throughout his career, even in difficult moments such as this.

Other issues of merit will be dealt with in the process by the defense.”
