A Brazilian passenger was contained on an American Airlines flight after trying to break into the pilot’s cabin last Thursday (24). The incident raises questions about aircraft safety procedures and the crew authority.
In an interview with CNN the coordinator of the civil aviation course, Alexandre Faro clarified that the use of force, when necessary, is authorized by the flight commissioners.
Faro explained that the training of professionals includes specific techniques to deal with crisis situations.
Training and authority on board
According to the expert, the training courses for commissioners include curriculum units focused on cabin management and crisis management.
“We have immobilization techniques where people learn how to immobilize a person, let’s say, with less physical impact so that one avoids hurting the person, but on the other hand they are also immobilized so that it does not cause risk to the safety of the aircraft and also for the other passengers who are there,” said Faro.
The teacher highlighted a crucial moment in aviation known as “closing of the doors”.
From that moment, the aircraft commander becomes the maximum on board authority. “While the door is closed, the authority is the aircraft commander,” Faro explained, adding that this authority extends to all decisions, including the boarding of luggage and passengers.
Jurisdiction and Security Procedures
Faro also clarified the procedures in case of onboard incidents.
When a problem occurs with a passenger, the commander contacts operations on land, which in turn trigger the competent authorities, such as the Federal police .
Jurisdiction is only transferred to these authorities when they enter the aircraft after opening the doors.
The expert emphasized that the commander’s authority cannot be contested during the flight.
Any decision made by the commander must be fulfilled, even if it can later be questioned on land. This clear hierarchy aims to ensure safety and order throughout the aircraft route.
