Flipkart and Polygon launch a joint project in the metaverse

Walmart-backed Indian e-commerce giant Flipkart has partnered with Polygon to launch a pilot project to allow customers to shop in the metaverse.

Flipkart is launching its own Flipverse metaverse, where top fashion brands will be able to promote personalized loyalty programs and offer their products to shoppers. The pilot program, launched in partnership with Polygon affiliate eDAO, aims to stimulate potential user engagement through the introduction of gamification and loyalty points.

Visitors to the Flipverse metaverse will be able to shop as if they were physically present in the store, as well as redeem loyalty points for digital collectibles from top fashion brands. The company has already signed on several partners including Puma, Noise, Nivea, Lavie, Tokyo Talkies, Campus, VIP, Ajmal Perfumes and Himalaya.

Metaverse researchers note that, so far, practical experience with retailing in virtual worlds has been rather limited. However, Flipkart and Polygon are confident that virtual shopping has significant potential to unlock.

Earlier, Suresh Kumar, CTO of U.S. retail giant Walmart, which owns 72% of Flipkart’s business, said that cryptocurrencies will be the basis of a technological breakthrough in the ways to pay for virtual and physical goods.
