Flooded stadiums, airport and cities disappear from the map: satellite shows destruction in RS

The floods that hit Rio Grande do Sul continue to cause damage in cities in Rio Grande do Sul. Images from the Sentinel-2 satellite show the devastation that the rain caused in the state capital, Porto Alegre, and in cities in the metropolitan region and in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul.

In the images, it is possible to see Internacional's Beira-Rio stadiums and the Grêmio Arena taken by the waters of the flood that hit the capital. The city of Canoas, next to Porto Alegre, has a large part of its neighborhoods submerged. The same happens with Eldorado do Sul.

The situation in the state could worsen even further in the coming days. This is because the formation of an extratropical cyclone is expected to cause more rain this week in Rio Grande do Sul. The cause of the instability is related to a cold front expected to cross the state between today and tomorrow.

Deaths in RS

The number of deaths confirmed as a result of the rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul since last week rose from 90 to 95, according to a report released by Civil Defense in the early evening of this Tuesday (7). In addition to the deaths, the state has 372 injured people and 131 missing people.

Four other deaths are under investigation. In other words, it continues to be determined whether these people died due to the rain or other causes.

In total, 1,443,950 people were affected. Of these, 159,036 are homeless and 48,799 are in temporary shelters.

The storms affected 401 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul. According to governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB), the number is four times greater than what was recorded in September last year, when the state was hit by the passage of an extratropical cyclone. At the time, 54 people died.

Almost 80% of the state affected

Almost 80% of the cities in Rio Grande do Sul were affected by the rains that have hit the state since the beginning of last week, according to a report released by Civil Defense this Tuesday afternoon (7).

According to the report, 397 of the 497 cities in Rio Grande do Sul were affected by the storms — equivalent to 79.88% of the total. In other words, only 100 did not have any impact related to rain. The list of affected cities can be seen here.
