Floods and heat waves. Which Italian cities are most at risk

More and more hot, in the form of heat waves, and more and more sudden phenomena such as floods. It is the picture that makes the relationship Risk Analysis. Climate change in six Italian cities created by the Euro-Mediterranean Center Foundation on Climate Change. And the measures that are being taken to stop these phenomena are insufficient.

The data are alarming for all the cities analyzed: Bologna, Milan, Naples, Rome, Turin and Venice. For each there are four sections. The Climate part has the future scenarios through the trends that can be identified in what has happened in the last 30 years. Then there are the climatic impacts linked to temperatures and precipitation. Then there is the Risk Assessment and the Analysis of Adaptation Tools, that is the means put in place to respond to the disasters caused by climate change.

In Naples there were 50 more days of intense heat a year than at the beginning of the century, thirty more in Milan, 29 in Turin and 28 in Rome. TO Venezia over the past 150 years the relative water level of the city has risen by more than 30 centimeters. The critical threshold has been exceeded 40 times in the past 10 years. Even Bologna and Milan have more and more frequent flood phenomena.

According to the perspective shown in the report heat waves and floods are the main impacts and are set to grow. To prevent these phenomena from having an even greater impact, global countermeasures are needed (limiting the increase in global temperature to within 2 degrees centigrade) but also local measures on greenhouse gas emissions and on the management of the territory undermined by the excessive density of buildings.
