Floods in Cuba leave one dead and thousands evacuated

At least one person died and thousands were evacuated from their homes when torrential rains hit the Granma region of eastern Cuba, triggering widespread flooding on Saturday.

A 60-year-old man drowned in Jiguani municipality, Granma region, after the Bayamo River overflowed, according to local reports.

The floods left several villages isolated, crops destroyed and power outages.

Granma authorities said more than 7,000 people were evacuated to state shelters or family homes, and around 10,000 homes were damaged.

The island’s Meteorological Institute said the showers and thunderstorms were caused by a combination of a depression in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere and a flow of moist air from the south.

Meteorological authorities predict heavy rains for the next 24 hours.
