Pump house 16, located near Rótula das Cuias, in Porto Alegre, had its electricity turned off by CEEE Equatorial for security measures, according to a statement issued by Porto Alegre City Hall, this Monday (6).
The shutdown occurred due to the worst flood faced by the capital of Rio Grande do Sul in its history.
According to information released by Mayor Sebastião Melo in a video on social media, the region was completely flooded. Melo recommended that residents seek safe areas and avoid staying on the ground floors of residences.
“I want to recommend that residents leave these areas if they can, do not stay on the ground floor. I'm going back to the Integrated Command Center, where the government is there to take all possible measures to reduce this flooding here in the region.” said the mayor.
Maurício Loss, general director of the Municipal Department of Water and Sewage (Dmae) of Porto Alegre, highlighted in a press conference that only 4 of the 23 pump houses are in operation due to adverse conditions. He also highlighted that returning the Guaíba level to 4 meters could take 7 to 10 days.
The water continued to advance through the Cidade Baixa and Menino Deus region, according to a warning from Porto Alegre City Hall. The city also advised residents to seek temporary shelters or safe areas until the situation normalizes.
