Floods in Rio Grande do Sul damaged 530 schools, impacting 216,883 enrolled students. The numbers were released this Sunday (12) in a report made by the Government of Rio Grande do Sul. Around 84 schools are serving as shelters for homeless people.
Furthermore, in total, 1,028 schools were affected in some way in 243 municipalities. This data represents that 40% of all schools in the state network were impacted by the climate disaster.
According to the state administration, of the 358 thousand students affected, 149 thousand have already returned to activities. The sum of students who were not impacted is 533 thousand students back at educational institutions.
The state government also says that the assessment of damage to schools is ongoing and that the return of all schools is happening gradually and with a focus on welcoming students and teachers based on an assessment carried out by the Regional Education Coordination (CRE) .
In the capital Porto Alegre, for example, there is no forecast for the return of classes. The same occurs in the Gaucho cities of Estrela, Canoas and GravataÃ, according to the content released by the Government of Rio Grande do Sul.
