The survey ‘Financial impacts of floods’, carried out by the Rio Grande do Sul Protest Offices, revealed that 6 out of 10 residents of the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre said their income was impacted by the floods in May.
Of these, almost half (49%) said they were “very affected” financially and 25% considered themselves “affected”. Also according to the survey, 7 in 10 respondents had their ability to buy essential products (such as food and drinking water) affected during the flood period.
More than half of those interviewed also reported having lost material goods.
Of these, 24% said they had lost everything they had in their homes and another 11% said they had lost their entire home, leaving only their land. Regarding the business owners and entrepreneurs interviewed, 31% said their businesses had been affected by the rains. Among employees, 69% had to miss work due to the weather issues and 8% said they had lost their jobs.
Approximately 80% of respondents from the greater Porto Alegre area said they had to interrupt or postpone plans due to the floods. Approximately 30% of respondents reported receiving financial assistance from the government, aid organizations, or individuals. Of these, 64% received financial assistance through the federal government’s Reconstruction Aid.
The study was carried out by the Rio Grande do Sul Protest Office in person in the cities of Porto Alegre, Canoas, Eldorado do Sul, Guaíba and São Leopoldo, all in the metropolitan region of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, between June 25 and July 3. 500 people were interviewed.
