The heavy rains that occur in Venezuela this Sunday (9), caused the death of at least 22 people in the community of Tejerias, which is 67 kilometers southwest of Caracas, according to the vice president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez. 52 people are still missing.
In a nationally broadcast statement, the deputy also said that the storms flooded about five rivers that are in the center of the country, sweeping large tree trunks and debris from the neighboring mountains, damaging businesses and agricultural land.
The pumps used to supply the community’s drinking water system were washed away by floodwaters.
Carlos Perez, deputy minister of the country’s civil protection system, said in a post on social media that 1,000 rescuers are looking for victims in the area. The rain also caused landslides in three other central states on Sunday morning, but with no casualties.
The rains in the country are due to the tropical phenomenon La Niña. In all, 40 people died in the last week due to the floods and landslides.
