The National Weather Service in Tampa has advised residents not to approach the beach, although the water appears to be receding.
“The water will come back,” the weather service said.
The water can recede when strong winds on the left side of the storm’s center push the water away from shore, according to CNN meteorologist Judson Jones.
According to the National Weather Service, nearly half of all tropical cyclone deaths come from storm surge.
“A storm surge is a rise in water level caused by strong wind from a storm that pushes water toward the shore,” according to CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller. “The wind literally piles up ocean water and pushes it towards land.”
“Here are some pictures of the water retreat in Venice. IMPORTANT NOTE: Water WILL come back. Please do not attempt to walk there or anywhere else with leaking water,” the weather service wrote on Twitter.
