Florida consumer services regulator urges to refrain from payments in cryptocurrency

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) urged state residents to be vigilant amid rising phone robot and crypto payment scams.

The consumer watchdog posted a warning outlining the scenarios crypto scammers use to scam their victims.

Criminals use special robots in telephone conversations with their victims with audio recordings of offers to invest in cryptocurrencies with a guarantee of security and high profits. Attackers often offer to buy goods for cryptocurrencies with the condition of making partial or full payment in advance:

“If you are asked to pay for something with a gift card or cryptocurrency, this is a scam. Only attackers will demand one of these types of payment, and once you send the money, you probably won’t be able to get it back.”

The FDACS is urging Florida residents to refrain from crypto payments. The Department recalled that no government agency will ask citizens for a Social Security card number, credit card number, or other personal information.

Therefore, Americans should first of all be alerted by such questions from an unfamiliar number that pretends to be a bank or a government organization. The Florida Department of Consumer Services has noted that in most cases, law enforcement and regulators do not have the means to trace crypto assets stolen by scammers and return them to their owners.

Recently, the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) urged citizens not to trust cryptocurrency influencers, as investors are unlikely to be able to protect their rights in the event of a loss of invested funds.
