Florida Governor: “It’s Better to Use Bitcoin Than Digital Dollar”

Florida Governor Ronald DeSantis continues to promote the initiative to pay taxes in the state using cryptocurrencies, but opposed the introduction of a digital dollar.

During a press conference in Wesley Chapel, Ronald DeSantis signed legislation aimed at promoting financial literacy in educational institutions. In part, it also covers cryptocurrencies. In order for local residents and organizations to use digital assets to pay taxes, they must be included in the legislation, the governor noted.

In December, DeSantis proposed that Florida businesses could pay government fees with cryptocurrencies, and also allocated a budget for blockchain experiments. Legislative bodies did not support his idea. However, the governor is convinced that the Florida authorities should implement bitcoin and other crypto assets to pay taxes, as this will make life easier for businesses and create favorable conditions for the development of the cryptocurrency industry.

At the same time, DeSantis is skeptical about the digital currency of the US Federal Reserve System (FRS). The Governor acknowledged that the digital dollar could increase the public’s access to secure financial services, as well as reduce the cost of international and domestic payments. And yet, he worries about the centralization of the digital dollar, which will be controlled by the federal government, while bitcoin is not controlled by any organization or country. And therein lies the advantage of cryptocurrencies over central bank digital currencies, DeSantis concluded.

“There is a big difference between decentralized and government cryptocurrencies. The digital dollar is uncharted territory, as the Fed can ban its use to buy certain goods. The authorities will control anyone’s participation in the economy, and financial institutions will be able to “turn people off” at the direction of the government. Therefore, the United States must pay attention not only to national security, but also to democratic values,” DeSantis said.

Recently, the mayor of Austin, Steve Adler (Steve Adler) also proposed to introduce blockchain into the city’s infrastructure, and use cryptocurrencies to pay fines, taxes and other fees.
