The time is counting down for Hurricane Milton’s sweeping passage of Florida. Residents have a few hours left to evacuate or take shelter before the storm unleashes a threatening rise in sea levels, accompanied by gale-force winds and heavy rain, in an area hit by Cyclone Elin two weeks ago. Millions of people along more than 300 miles (483 km) of coastline have been ordered to evacuate and authorities issued increasingly urgent warnings this morning as extreme weather approaches.
