Singer Miley Cyrus released, this Friday (13), “Flowers” – the first single from her eighth studio album, which will hit streaming platforms in March.
The song brings the artist in a confident tone, writing verses about self-love, with the right to hint at her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, a Hollywood actor known for “The Hunger Games” and brother of “Thor”, Chris Hemsworth.
In addition, the sunny song full of grooved bass lines marks Miley Cyrus’s return to pop after a successful journey through rock.
“Flowers” is the first appetizer from the album “Endless Summer Vacation”, which is scheduled for release on March 10th.
It will be Miley’s first studio production since releasing “Plastic Hearts” (2020) in an unexpected and fruitful turn into a rock phase.
She spent two years on tour with “Plastic Hearts” – which also spawned a live album, “Attention: Miley Live” (2022) – and yielded the best Lollapalooza Brasil show of last year.
In this new album, the singer has already stated in a press release that it will be a “letter to Los Angeles”. According to the label, the release reflects “all the strength that the artist has found in focusing on her health, both physical and mental”.
The video for “Flowers” sees the singer in Californian landscapes while singing empowering lines like: “I can love myself better than you can”.
Message for the ex
Miley Cyrus has not made any explicit statements linking “Flowers” to her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. However, it doesn’t take many seconds for suspicion to appear in the song.
In addition to the fact that she released the single on her ex’s birthday, in the very first verse, she sings: “We were good, we were gold / Kind of dream that can’t be sold / We were fine, until we weren’t / We built a house and we saw it burn
The couple met during the recording of the film “The Last Song” in 2008, in which they were protagonists, and made their relationship public two years later. They got engaged in 2012, broke up, got back together in 2016 and got married at the end of 2018.
Months later, in August 2019, they broke up. In November 2018, in a seasonal fire, their home in Malibu, California, was burned down – possibly the reference to “Flowers”.
Miley fans also raised on social networks the theory of the singer having done a reinterpretation of a song that, as reported by fans, Liam liked and dedicated to her.
The song would be “When I Was Your Man” by Bruno Mars. According to the viral hypothesis, the chorus of “Flowers” would be a response to Mars’ lamented verses about what he should have done in their relationship before the breakup.
For example, while Bruno Mars sings that he should have bought her flowers (“That I should have bought you flowers”), Miley says she can buy herself flowers (“I can buy myself flowers”).
The theory is reinforced because other verses of the two songs dialogue, as shown in an art made by a fan club of the singer.
If Mars says he should have held her hand (“And held your hand”), Miley sings that she holds her own hand (“I can hold my own hand”), for example.
