Flu epidemic in Rio reinforces warning about prevention and vaccination measures

At least four cities in Rio de Janeiro have registered a significant increase in flu cases in the last three weeks. In the capital alone, more than 20,000 people were diagnosed with the H3N2 influenza virus in this period. In the state, two municipalities have already recognized that the situation evolved from an outbreak to an epidemic. In addition to the capital, the municipality of São João de Meriti admitted to experiencing a similar situation.

According to data from the Infogripe bulletin, 12 other states in the country have registered high notifications of severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by the flu virus. With thousands of cases diagnosed in recent weeks and adherence below expectations for vaccination against influenza, experts warn of the risks of a simultaneous outbreak of flu and Covid-19, with the circulation of the Ômicron variant in the country.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents a balance of concerns about the rise in cases of influenza virus infection. To describe the importance of prevention measures and flu vaccines, the infectologist Rosana Richtmann, from Instituto Emílio Ribas, participates in this episode.
