Flurry of Sympathy Could Give Ukraine Band Top Prize at Eurovision

the ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra must take advantage of a wave of public sympathy to win the Eurovision Contest of music, when the artists take the stage in the Italian city of Turin on Saturday night (14).

The song “Stefania” by the Kalush Orchestra, sung in Ukrainian, mixes rap with traditional folk music and pays homage to vocalist Oleh Psiuk’s mother.

Bookmakers have made it a favorite for the annual contest, which typically attracts a television audience of around 200 million people, based on Ukraine’s situation after Russia’s invasion in February.

“I would like to see the Kalush Orchestra as a winner, but not because of the war,” said Maryna Utkina, who attended the semi-finals in Turin this week.

“I want to see her win because of the music, because the music is very beautiful, it’s very special,” added Utkina, who is from Ukraine but has lived in Italy for three years.

The band takes its name from the western Ukrainian city of Kalush. It finished second in the country’s national song contest, but replaced winner Alina Pash after controversy over a visit she made to Crimea in 2015, a year after the region was annexed by Russia.

Russia was excluded from the contest this year.

Italy are the hosts after winning last year with Maneskin’s rock “Zitti e Buoni”.

The contest is decided by a combination of votes from the official jury and spectators from participating nations.
