FNP signs cooperation agreement to help Petrópolis recover from tragedy

The National Front of Mayors (FNP) and the Petrópolis City Hall signed this Tuesday (22) a technical cooperation agreement to help the municipality in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro to recover from the flood, which has so far left a balance over 180 dead.

The objective is to facilitate the offer of collaboration from other municipalities, so that the city recovers from the tragedy of February 15th.

The agreement provides for technical assistance, such as the availability of engineers, geologists, budget professionals and other areas, in addition to equipment, labor and collaborations of different types that may be required.

The FNP will create a commission, formed by mayors who have already faced natural catastrophes in their municipalities, so that there is an exchange of experiences on actions to face the tragedies.

Even before the signing of the term, cities already showed solidarity and provided various types of support, such as machinery from Duque de Caxias. Over the weekend, agents from cleaning companies in Rio de Janeiro (Comlurb) and Niterói (Clin) were responsible for cleaning Rua Teresa, the most important fashion hub in the city and one of the main ones in the state. The area is close to Morro da Oficina, where landslides destroyed around 50 houses.

The agreement was symbolically signed, during an online meeting, in which the president of the FNP, Edvaldo Nogueira (PDT), mayor of Aracajú, and Rubens Bomtempo (PSB), who is in his fourth term in charge of Petrópolis, and the attorney general of the mountain town, Miguel Barreto.

“Our idea is so that the mayors can help in any way possible. All City Halls. Whoever has technicians, experience, expertise, in these catastrophe issues, in soil issues, in reconstruction projects. It is time for Brazil, for Brazilian mayors to join hands with Petrópolis and Mayor Rubens Bomtempo”, said Edvaldo Nogueira.

The mayor of the mountain town thanked the support offered by the other localities. I want to thank the solidarity of all the municipalities that are helping Petrópolis in this difficult time for all of us. We are working hard to get our city back. And this help we received with great affection. It is an aid that speeds up the city’s recovery, and the residents of Petrópolis are already seeing this”, says Bomtempo.
