Foldable clamshell smartphones are getting cheap: Huawei Pocket S is introduced

Huawei held an event in China where it boasted about its success in the domestic market and at the same time introduced a new foldable Pocket S smartphone in a clamshell form factor. The novelty has inherited the style of the previous model Huawei P50 Pocket, but unlike its predecessor, it has become lighter, thinner and generally more compact. In addition, instead of a flagship chip, a mid-range processor is installed here.

Perhaps the main visual difference between Pocket S and P50 Pocket is the variety of color schemes. The smartphone is offered in six color options, so everyone will find a color that suits their preferences. For the first time in the industry, the device received a special hinge mechanism, consisting of several elements, resulting in a space in the form of a drop at the bend. Pocket S uses a variety of innovative materials, including high-strength MIM steel and zirconium-based liquid metal. The manufacturer claims that the smartphone can withstand 400 thousand folding.

The new screen has not changed. It’s still the same 6.9-inch foldable OLED display that, when folded, is almost the same width on all sides. Its resolution is 2790×1188 pixels, density is 442ppi, refresh rate is up to 120Hz, touch sampling rate is up to 300Hz, and PWM frequency is 1440Hz. On the back is a 1.04-inch external screen, which together with the main camera form a double ring. On this screen, you can view notifications, photos, weather and other information from applications, as well as make payments without having to open your smartphone.

The hardware basis is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 4G – not the most productive chipset, but it copes well with many tasks. The RAM in the smartphone is 8 GB, the permanent memory can be 128, 256 or 512 GB. Huawei Pocket S uses an innovative flexible graphene cooling system that increases the heat conduction area by 80%. Responsible for autonomy is a 4000 mAh battery with support for 40 W fast charging.

The main camera includes a 40-megapixel RYYB sensor with f/1.8 aperture, a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle module (f/2.2) and a laser sensor for focusing. For selfies, a 10.7 megapixel camera is used. The cameras work with a new night vision algorithm to optimize light and shadows. The smartphone uses a new antenna design that ensures stable communication in any position.

Huawei Pocket S in 8 / 128 GB and 8 / 256 GB configurations will go on sale on November 10 at a price of 5,988 yuan (about 51,200 rubles) and 6,488 yuan (about 55,500 rubles), respectively. A version with 8/5122 GB of memory will appear in December, its price will be 7,488 yuan (about 64,000 rubles). Compared to peers, the novelty from Huawei looks like the most affordable option on the market.
